Most of the luxuries, and many of the so-called comforts of life, are not only not indispensable, but positive hindrances to the elevation of mankind.

Henry David Thoreau, Walden

I’ve never been a lawn guy. I’ve lived in the suburbs for six years, and had my own lawn to care for some years before that. But I don’t take any pride in my lawn like guys are supposed to. A well-manicured lawn means absolutely nothing to me. I secretly dream of plowing the whole thing up, salting the earth, and covering it in sand—complete with an umbrella and a beach volleyball net.

Maybe it’s laziness, but I like to think it’s my rural roots. I grew up on a farm—40 acres in the middle of nowhere. Out there, you don’t mow the lawn, you cut the grass. It’s not about appearances, but being able to walk to the mailbox without getting covered in ticks. Cutting the grass was something we had to do, and it didn’t matter how well we did it because the neighbors weren’t going to be impressed—they lived a half mile away.

So, I mow my lawn, but grudgingly. When I moved into my first rent house, I wouldn’t mow until the grass was tall enough for raccoons to hide effectively. As a result, I would end up with large piles of dead grass on my lawn from my bagless mower. My elderly neighbor would leave her rake leaning against my house. I stubbornly refused to take the hint.

(In my defense, I had started dating the woman I would eventually marry, so I had other things on my mind.)

After I got married and moved to the suburbs, I got a little better about mowing. Only muskrats could hide, and I owned my own rake. We bought a riding lawnmower because to us, the backyard looked huge. It wasn’t, and a good portion of it didn’t have grass at all, but it still looked huge. But even having a machine vaguely similar to a four-wheeler—with a cup holder, no less—did not increase my interest in mowing.

Then last year, the riding mower up and died. There’s something wrong with the carburetor, but every attempt I’ve made to fix it has failed. I’m not a small-engine guy, just like I’m not a lawn guy. I finally paid somebody to mow the lawn one last time before winter, then ignored the problem till this summer.

This year, we got a push mower via freecycle. It lasted a while, then died. My father loaned me another push mower and a two-wheel weedeater, and a trailer to pull them home. The weedeater died immediately, the mower lasted a short time, and the trailer was stolen. It was about this time that I decided our house was built on top of an ancient lawnmower burial ground, and was therefore cursed.

I thought perhaps buying new would appease the spirits. I did some shopping, and was heavily leaning toward an electric mower. I’d had an electric weedeater I liked (which also died this year, but not while it was at my house, so I think it was unrelated to the curse), and anything without a carburetor seemed like a good idea. The cordless lawnmowers were out of our price range, so I began working out if I could get by with a corded one. As I was planning the most efficient route that would shred the fewest extension cords per mow, I realized I was replacing one type of complexity with another. An electric mower wouldn’t solve my issue with mowers—that they really require more maintenance than I’m willing to give them—it would only replace that issue with a different one. I started wondering if there wasn’t a simpler solution.

That’s when I started researching reel push mowers. When the idea first came to me, it seemed like such a perfect, beautiful, simple idea. One of those ideas that either works out great, or kicks off a series of misadventures that at some point lead to the idea-person being covered in mud. But it was a fairly cheap thing to try, and mud doesn’t bother me that much, so I decided to go for it.

I went to my local Lowe’s and bought the widest one I could find. As I put it in the basket and pushed it to the checkout, I imagined all eyes in the store were on me. People were no doubt whispering to each other, “…Is that what I think it is…he must be crazy…Daddy, what is that man doing?”

I took it home and assembled it. It looks like a Segway’s hick cousin. When I took it out for it’s first mow. I pushed it two feet and the thing stopped. Wouldn’t budge. I got out my tools, adjusted the cutting plate, and was back on my way. The whirring blades created a cloud of grass clippings around themselves, so I named it Edward Scissorhands.

That first mow was quite a test—the lawn was a bit overgrown, and some of the weeds were too tall for Edward. Still, I thought it went pretty well, and with the help of the weedeater the lawn looked good. I went out again the following week, and things went much smoother. I’ve mowed a couple more times since then, and each time seems a little easier than the last. It’s not the easiest thing to push, but it’s not terribly difficult either, and I can definitely use the workout.

So have I found the perfect lawnmower? For me, I may have. It starts right up, it’s environmentally friendly, it’s good exercise, and it’s low maintenance. It can’t handle weeds above a certain height, so I’m forced to mow more often. And the lawn looks better to me. I don’t know that it actually is better, but to my eyes it seems better groomed. I’m still not a lawn guy, but after each mow I am a little proud of what I’ve accomplished.

And so on this, Blog Action Day, I would ask you: Do you need as much lawnmower as you have? Or could you, perhaps, simplify?

Yesterday, we officially launched the all new Smart Goat website. It has a new look, new features, and, with any luck, a new tendency to get updated regularly.

This redesign has been a long time coming. We’ve been working on it off and on for months, when time permitted. In the last couple of weeks, though, it’s been our primary focus. We’re looking at doing a lot of new projects in the next few weeks and we wanted a proper place to showcase those projects.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be posting here about the technical aspects of the new site — the techniques we used and how it all came together. And on the Smart Goat blog I’ll be writing about why we did it the way we did and the business advantage of those techniques.

To start things off, here are a few highlights of the new site:

Movable Type 4 — The new site is completely powered by the new Movable Type 4. MT4 is an absolute joy to work with — so much so that when I get around to redesigning this site, it will go back to being an MT blog.

Newsletter — We’re going to be publishing an email newsletter about once a month. It will basically be the same as what’s posted to the blog, except with slightly more stories about goats.

Events & Links — The page footer displays business-related links we’ve delicioused and events we’re attending.

Best of all, the design is actually finished, something I never achieved with the previous design. And by finished I mean I still have a list of 30+ things I still want to do to the site. But still, it’s finished.

We were on something of a tour ourselves, having first driven to Graham, TX for a meeting with a potential client, then to Dallas, then home, all in the same day.

Adobe puts on quite a show. They rented out a movie theater for the day, much to the dismay of all the people who came by wanting to watch a movie. They had plenty of free food, drink, games, etc. It’s pretty cool to walk up to a movie concession counter and have your choice of anything you want, for free.

The sessions were good, too. They walked us through what the Adobe Integrated Runtime is, what you can do with it, and how to get started using it. It’s a pretty interesting runtime. Nobody’s going to decide to build an AIR app instead of a web app, but I can see two scenarios where it would be the way to go:

For web developers/designers who want to use their existing skills to build desktop apps.

For creating widgets to supplement the functionality of an existing site.

And in fact, I’ve already got a few ideas that fall squarely in the second category. I think I’ll play with it and see what I can come up with. Maybe AIR will be useful, maybe it won’t. Regardless, we had a fun (albeit exhausting) evening with the OnAIR folks.

She kept track of everything on it. Once you get an organizational system in place, when it’s not there you feel like part of your brain is missing.

Good husband that I am, I have graciously offered to give her my Treo. Of course, I suppose if I did that I would have to get a new phone. I wonder if any interesting models have come out recently…

Actually, even though I feel the call of the iPhone as much as anyone else, the price tag is a little steep for me. So, while I wait for either the price to come down or my checking account balance to go up, I’ve been checking out various iPhone giveaways that have sprung up recently. If you’re interested in the different ways to get a free iPhone, I’ve posted a bunch of them on SweepsGoat.

With apologies to anyone who watches it. Actually, I’ve had more fun with the videos than I expected. I don’t think video blogging is really my thing, but it’s a fun creative exercise, not unlike NaNoWriMo or Script Frenzy (Which I finished, btw. More on that later.).

Hopefully my efforts to do something nice for my wife will not be in vain…

I haven’t had time to really play with it yet, but I wanted to give my initial impressions.

When I first heard about it, I was under the impression it would be similar to Yahoo Pipes. While the idea is similar — primarily, using feeds as data input for building web apps — the implementation is completely different. Where Yahoo Pipes is a visual app builder, Google Mashup Editor is a web-based IDE. It consists of a text editor, feed viewer, and a test environment.

The real meat of GME is the
<gm:>
tags. You can think of this as a templating language. The tags provide UI controls, data access, control structures, etc. You combine these with basic (X)HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to build your mashup. When you run the application, the tags are “compiled” into standard JavaScript.

Now, here’s the $60,000 question: If the
<gm:>
tags are simply template tags that turn into JS, why didn’t Google just release it as a library? It seems like it would be simpler — and more useful — to let people download a Google Mashup Library than to build an entire IDE around it and restrict applications to only living on their servers. But maybe that’s coming later.

As I said, I haven’t had much time to play with it yet, but hopefully I will get something built with it soon to really test out what it can do.

After two years of writing novels for NaNoWriMo, I decided to give the first ever Script Frenzy a try. If I’ve learned anything from NaNoWriMo it’s that my writing tends to be heavy on dialogue, light on description — which seems like it would translate well to screenplays.

When I first heard the challenge would be 20,000 words in 30 days I thought, “This will be a piece of cake.” After doing 50,000 words in a month — not once, but twice — this sounded like a vacation. As June grew closer, I started to worry I was underestimating the task. Writing a screenplay is very different from writing a novel, which could mean it’s also more difficult.

Two days in I’m back to being pretty confident. I’m ahead in my word count, which is highly unusual for me. It’s also not taking me very long to reach my goal each day. Part of that is because of Celtx, an absolutely incredible piece of open-source screenwriting software. It’s very easy to use, and it takes care of all the formatting so you can concentrate on writing.

I don’t have aspirations of being a screenwriter, but it’s a fun little creativity challenge, and an adventure — and adventure is good for the soul.

Plus, if I ever encounter someone famous I’ll have something to ask them to read and therefore make them feel awkward about the whole meeting.

I’m proud to announce the launch of the latest member of the Smart Goat family: SweepsGoat. SweepsGoat is a community site built for people to share online sweepstakes. Web 2.0 folks will recognize it as a Digg-style site — just like Web 1.0 folks recognize Digg as a Kuro5hin-style site. This has all happened before, it will all happen again.

Anyway, if you like entering online sweepstakes I hope you’ll drop by and give it a try. Right now it’s your basic “submit and vote” website, but we have some features on the way that will make it more useful to dedicated sweepers.

We had various motivations for creating this site. Angela’s something of a sweepstakes hobbyist, and we’ve talked from time to time about the various sweepstakes communities that try to keep some or all of their listings behind a pay wall. This is a topic for another time, but one of my main rules for business is:

If your business model is based on the scarcity of information, you’re doomed.

So we were kind of interested to see if a thriving sweepstakes community could be built around the idea of everyone sharing everything. Of course, we would like to make a little advertising revenue off the whole thing, but if the site can just pay its own bills, I’ll be happy. Basically, this is another business experiment, and it will either work or it won’t.

I should also mention we have other stuff in the works that I will hopefully get to announce soon. I’m almost done with a new design for this site, and we’re also polishing up a new design for Smart Goat. Gift Goat is still in the works, but I have no idea when that will be ready. As I get to work more on our various ideas I’ll be writing about them here. So you’ve been warned.

Dear WILLIAM MABRAY

We are sending you this letter to remind you that you can:

Access your online statement by logging into NetBenefitsSM, selecting PLATINUM EQUITY, and clicking Online Statement in the View menu on your plan’s Summary page.

Print your statement using NetBenefits, or obtain a paper version by calling your plan’s toll-free number at (800) 835-5095, free of charge

Change the way statements are delivered to you by visiting Mail Preferences under the Your Profile tab

Online Statements let you view and print statements for any time period within the past 24 months. Remeber, you can also visit NetBenefits at any time to manage your workplace benefits and access learning tools and resources to help you stay on track toward reaching your retirement goals.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact us by visiting NetBenefits or by calling your plan’s toll-free customer service number.

Why, yes, as a matter of fact, I do have a question: What’s the URL? They mail me a letter to extol the virtues of using their online system, and never think to tell me where it is? The letter didn’t even mention the main Fidelity site. Not that it would have helped — you won’t find NetBenefits mentioned on their home page. If you guess that you need to click the login link you will finally find NetBenefits.

I’m a geek, so of course I went looking for the site — although it was for the challenge and not so I could use the site. Most people, though, probably just threw the letter away when they realized it didn’t include the one crucial piece of information necessary to take advantage of everything else in the letter.

Most of the time, Windows and I have a roommates-that-aren’t-friends relationship. It does its thing and I do mine and we generally don’t get in each other’s way. Windows says it’s going to hang one of its paintings over the couch and I say, “cool.” I say I’m going to stay up all night playing Desktop TD and it just nods its head absently. It’s a marriage of convenience, and both parties are ok with that.

But today was different.

I have a small, generic mp3 player that I use to listen to podcasts. It’s fairly crappy, but it works for what I need it for, and it was free, so I use it. When I want to add files to it I just plug it into a USB port, drag files to it from iTunes, and unplug. Simple.

But today was different.

Today, I plugged it in to get a podcast to listen to while cleaning the pool. Instead of showing up as a drive like it usually does, it was listed in Explorer as an MTP device, with an icon that looked vaguely like a tombstone. When I opened the tombstone in Explorer it had a “removable storage” device inside it, but not any of the files I knew should be there. The removable storage device was also empty.

I tried unplugging and replugging the player, I tried replacing it’s battery, I tried muttering obscenities. Nothing helped. So I started Googling. I learned that a MTP is a Portable Media Device (apparently the acronym is not in English) and that recent versions of Windows Media Player will recognize devices as MTPs and take what it considers appropriate action.

That’s when I remembered that Windows had recently told me it wanted to upgrade Windows Media Player and I had said, “cool.”

It seems that, for the purposes of DRM, MTP devices only show files that have been synced to them from the computer they are plugged into. That means if you used one computer to put songs on your mp3 player, then plug that player into a second computer, Windows helps you not inadvertently copy those songs to the second computer. This “feature” is based on absolutely nothing — not the licensing of the songs, not the type of files involved, nothing. This computer did not put those files there, so you may not see them, and we’re simply not going to argue about it.

So I kept Googling. I did finally find a solution to the problem, although it was a little more complicated for me, so I thought I would describe it here.

Go into Device Manager, uninstall the device, and unplug it.

Open c:\windows\system32\drivers and rename WudfRd.sys and wpdusb.sys.

Plug the device back in. Windows is going to recognize it as a MTP again, but it will say it’s not working properly because of a problem with the driver.

Go back into Device Manager, right-click on the device, and choose properties.

Switch to the Driver tab. Click the update driver button. This will launch the Hardware Update Wizard. Choose the following options:

No.

Install from a list or specific location.

Don’t search, I will choose a driver to install.

At this point, you should get a list of drivers: the MTP driver and a USB driver. Choose the USB driver.

And then you’ll have your device back. Most likely, renaming the MTP driver files is unnecessary, but it feels good, so I recommend it.

My computer, my rules. You don’t see me going into Bill Gates house and hiding all his cutlery so he doesn’t gut a panda. Not four feet from this computer is a Linux machine that I’m finding new uses for every day.
